Located in the heart of the buzzing city of Ludhiana, the college offers 11 post graduate, 6 graduate courses and 5 certificate courses. For honing the soft skills of the students, the Finishing School is being run under RUSA Scheme (MHRD). The college has state of the art ICT facilities and highly qualified and experienced faculty. Smart classrooms, science labs, computer labs with Wi-Fi facilities provide a complete experience for college students in all respects. For the students hailing from far off places, there are separate hostels to accommodate about 150 boys and 100 girls. The institution also runs an Evening College which caters to the students who are working full time.
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Library of the college is fully automated using updated software Soul-2.0. Books can be searched online through KOHA application. There is also the facility of N-list programme where faculty and students can access all the reference material online. The library has more than 1,07,400 books, 6300 e-journals, 2 lakh eBooks, subscription to 4 journals, 20 newspapers, and 40 magazines. In addition to the central library, the departments have their own departmental libraries where the students can get the course related books. A separate library for evening college with 6230 books is also offered by the institution for Evening College.
The college infrastructure has been recently upgraded under the RUSA scheme. Four smart panels have been purchased for smart class rooms. Three 65-inch smart panels have been allotted to English, Economics and Chemistry departments respectively. One 86-inch smart panel has been installed in New Seminar Hall.
The institution’s greatest strength is its well-qualified faculty who leave no stone unturned in producing intellectually sharp graduates and postgraduates. The teachers research and publish extensively, present papers at conferences worldwide, win accolades and yet consider themselves as teachers first. They are encouraged to further enhance their knowledge by attending Workshops, Seminars, Refreshers, and Orientation courses to learn about the most recent breakthroughs in their field. It is a matter of immense pride that two of our faculty, both from the department of Physics, Prof Nitin Sood and Prof Narender Budhiraja have been awarded patents in 2022.
In the results declared by the university so far, numerous students from various departments have proved their mettle and secured positions in the university toppers' list. Shilpa Jain of MA Economics, Anu Jindal of MSc Maths, Sakshi Arora and Amandeep Kaur of MCom Business Innovations, Chandan from MA Geography, Mohit Mayer in MSc Chemistry, Simranjeet Singh from MSc Physics and Neha from MA Hindi were declared first in the university. Shabnam of MA English, Devinder Bhola of MA Punjabi and Priyanka from MA Hindi bagged the second position in the university merit list. Simarpreet and Ashita of Economics Dept and Chandan and Pawan Deep Singh of Geography Dept have cleared the UGC NET exam for Lectureship. Simranjeet Singh and Rohit from MSc Physics have qualified the GATE exam.
To live by our motto “Dare to be true”, the college encourages students to develop their personality in order to prepare them to handle global issues. In order to achieve this goal, our college strives to balance the five dimensions of students entering its doors: physical, intellectual, ethical, social, and cultural capabilities. The college was declared first runner-up in the Panjab University Zonal Youth and Cultural Festival. During the festival, 16 colleges participated and 66 competitions were conducted. Our students competed in 59 categories and won in 51 categories, claiming the second position. The college lifted overall trophy in Intercollege Cultural Fiesta Xpressions-2023 held at GNIMT and Uprise2k23 organised by Ludhiana Group of Colleges.
NCC Army and Air Wing as well as NSS units organise camps for students at regular intervals. Three of our Air Wing Cadets CWO Umesh Chander, C/SGT Rohit and C/SGT Pankaj got selected for All India Vayu Sainik Camp held at Jodhpur from 24th September to 5th October 2022. Our Cadet Warrant Officers Umesh Chander and Suraj were selected for Attachment camp at Gwalior. Eight cadets appeared for C certificate exam and 26 cadets appeared in B certificate exam held in February 2023.
Our NSS unit is very active and keeps the students involved in a flurry of activities throughout the year. Apart from sensitising them towards cleanliness and green initiatives, it helps them show consideration towards community before self. Our NSS volunteer Keshav marched in the Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path as part of NSS Contingent. Out of 40 lakh NSS volunteers, 200 were shortlisted and only 148 made it to the contingent. Keshav was among the 4 boys from Punjab who were selected for the Republic Day parade camp.
Institution’s Innovation Council has been actively involved in providing a rich learning experience for the students by organising expert sessions, workshops, field trips and fests. A field visit to the Incubation Unit (Golden Jubilee Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation) of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar was organized on 9th and 10th March 2023 in which around 200 students of IIC and other departments visited and attained a special knowledge of Innovation cell-related activities and the set-up. An ‘Idea Challenge’ contest was organised by the IIC to initiate a spark of creativity and innovation amongst the students. Students showcased their innovative ideas for startups in various fields.
While academics are vital, sports-related activities play a crucial role in forming a student’s personality and character. The college prioritizes athletics and encourages its students to participate in various events with the same philosophy. Our students compete in Inter-College, District, University, State, and National level sports activities throughout the year. The sportsmen of this college have made their mark on the global map. Our pride is Kanwar Gurbaz Sandhu who is a sportsman par excellence and has represented India in World Cup and Asia Cup Basketball 2023. Nehal Wadhera who is a left-handed batsman and an occasional leg break bowler, plays for Punjab cricket team in domestic cricket, having previously represented the India under-19 cricket team and IPL as a Mumbai Indian player.
The glorious tradition of the college has been maintained by holding national and international seminars, youth festivals, educational tours, interactive sessions, quiz contests etc. The college magazine THE SATLUJ is a showcase of talent in writing and other prize winning achievements of the students. The college newsletter YOUTHQUAKE records campus activities and student achievements in detail.
The college has a dynamic Career Counselling and Placement Cell which provides guidance for placement and career opportunities by conducting seminars for students to sensitise them about adopting the right strategy to prepare for various competitive exams. Many placement drives were organised for the students by Arora Steel Mills, Reliance Jio and HDFC Life respectively. Many deserving students were shortlisted and offered placement. The placement cell also coordinates with the District Bureau of Employment and helps them benefit from the career opportunities available in the public and private sectors.
The campus is very rich in terms of flora. There are more than 2000 trees and many herbs, shrubs and medicinal plants which give the campus a serene and comforting appearance. A thick belt of large shady trees in the periphery of the college have found to be bringing down noise and cutting down dust and storms. The Eco Club of the college initiates green practices in the college including tree plantation drives and rallies and seminars for sensitising the students towards sustainable environment. The college has launched "Each One Plant One" campaign and has contributed to the green cover of the institution and the surrounding areas.
