Our college was set up in Ludhiana city of undivided British Punjab in 1920 and has already celebrated its 100th years of establishment. Undergraduate courses in sciences (Non medical) started in 1932 and the department of Physics has become one of the globally recognised, emerging and leading department in basic sciences. Our college was renamed in the honour of space scientist Shri Satish Chandar Dhawan who was the student of Physics department of our college. Over the years, this department has diversified in its area of imparting education and has started its post graduation program in the year 2016 to benefits students coming from rural and urban areas district Ludhiana. Further achievements of our undergraduate as well as postgraduate students in the examination conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh have proved the quality of education provided by our teaching faculty. One of our student Chander Shekher is working as a senior scientist in DRDO. Not only this, many of our students have joined prestigious institutes like IITs and PRL of our countries. Furthermore Udit Sagar has recently joined Indian Air Forces to serve the country.

As far as infrastructure is concerned, this department has four well equipped laboratories for undergraduate courses and two well designed laboratories for post graduate courses. Also all the laboratories are designed according to the recent syllabi prescribed by Panjab University Chandigarh. Main objective of the department is to inculcate scientific temperament and rational thinking among our students.

Our department maintains its own library with a capacity of nearly 500 books to assist needy and poor students. Various activities such as Physics quiz, seminar, extension lecture/workshop are conducted for the professional growth of the faculty as well as of the students. We are dedicated to maintain productive and academic quest in the challenging time to come.
